Low-Relief Paper Module Sculpture

With this body of work Rachael explores the expressive qualities of colour, the interaction of objects and surface, and interconnection. Her work is an intersection of the disciplines of art, craft, and design, and draws inspiration from everyday functional objects, decorative arts, and architecture.

Working intuitively and spontaneously, she approaches each piece of artwork as an experiment and a puzzle to solve, allowing for the process to determine the outcome. Rachael creates boldly individual geometric paper modules, and assembles these into a greater compositional whole. They reference textile patchwork and the interlocking pieces of puzzles. She utilizes paper goods in vibrant colour palettes and intricate patterns to create compositions to explore unusual combinations and embrace maximalism. The artworks are joyful and positive with a sense of balance and flow from one element to the next.

For Rachael, working with patterns and colour has been a fascinating means of exploring history, the effects of colonialism, the intersections and influence between different cultures, the rich symbolism and meaning in patterns and surface design, etc. She enjoys the challenge of bringing seemingly different elements together in a single piece of work, to observe how they interact, connect, and harmonize.
