Clocking In For Unpaid Labour - Pop-Up Exhibition, August 22-24, 2025
The Burnaby Arts Council invites you to visit Deer Lake Gallery for pop-up exhibit 'Clocking In for Unpaid Labour Canada'. I have one of my punch-card pieces in this exhibition.
Time cards record the hourly work done by workers in paid institutions. In many ways they are obsolete today, but how do we track all the hours of unpaid labour we contribute, sometimes daily.
Local artists and curators, @jenniejohnstonartist and @shaminasenaratne invited artists and community members across the nation to ponder the work they do without pay, including work that may be paid but was undervalued and/or underpaid. Unpaid or underpaid work is universal, we all do this work, from laundry to workplace overtime to caring for an aging parent.
Over months of creation and dialogue, artists from seven provinces and one territory contributed over one hundred time cards addressing diverse perspectives.
This exhibit showcases the original art made on time cards featuring ink, textiles, collage, paint, stories, sewing and other materials or methods contributors included to create their works.
This important exhibition opens Friday August 22nd, with workshops hosted by the curators, inviting visitors to create their own Time Cards, and also learn about the history of Labour Day. More below:
